What Does a Hose Reel Cost?

A hose reel costs far less up front than a pivot for the same field, but runs at higher pressure and takes labor to move. Here's what drives the price, and the starting price on every model.

What drives the price

Hose diameter and length
The biggest factor. Polyethylene hose is most of a reel's cost, and every step up in diameter or length adds to it.
Frame and gearbox
R-Series reels use simpler mechanical controls. Vario Rain reels add the synchronized gearbox and hydraulics. Four-wheel frames cost more.
Gun and nozzles
Gun size follows hose size. Part-circle, low-angle and booster options change the package.
Options
Rain-control computers, remote monitoring and shutoff options add cost, and labor savings.
Pump and supply
Reels need high inlet pressure. An existing pump may need upgrading, or you may need a PTO or engine pump.
Delivery and setup

Running costs

Energy. Reels typically need 100–160 PSI at the inlet, more than most pivots, so pumping cost per acre-inch is usually higher. The right hose size keeps friction, and your power bill, down.

Labor. Someone has to pull out the hose and move the reel between lanes, usually once or twice a day. A rain-control computer and auto shutoff cut down on checking.

Upkeep. Turbine drives have no engine to service. Plan on gearbox oil, grease, gun wear parts, and eventually hose.

Flexibility. One reel can water several fields or farms, so the cost per acre drops the more ground it covers.
